Is Your Refrigerator Freezer Thawing Out? What You Can Do

by Ricky Carlson

If the freezer in your refrigerator is thawing out, it is going to be a problem, especially if you have a lot of food in your freezer. For example, if you stock up on food and it's all thawing out, you'll need to cook it right away or you'll risk letting it go bad. Nobody wants to waste food because of a bad freezer. To help prevent this from happening, you need to act quickly and get your food to a freezer to keep it frozen, then you need to repair your freezer. Read on for helpful repair information.

1. Adjust The Thermostat

If your freezer is jam-packed with food, you should adjust the thermostat on your freezer. The more food you have in your freezer, the warmer your food will get just from being stacked and crammed inside. Adjust the thermostat and lower the temperature. Do this without any food inside to see if it freezes up inside again. If this helps improve the temperature, you don't have to worry about any food loss.

2. Clean the Top and Back of the Refrigerator/Freezer

Your appliance can build up with dust and other debris with time, or you may be someone that likes to stack belongings on top of the refrigerator to save space. Remove everything from the top of the refrigerator/freezer and pull out your appliance to clean up the back of it as well. The coils at the back may be very dusty or covered in debris that can cause your appliance to not be able to cool effectively. Clean your appliance at least once per month to avoid issues.

3. Check the Coil

While your appliance is pulled out, inspect the coils at the back for any damage or issues. The coils may have become damaged with time; you should inspect the coils after you have cleaned and vacuumed them to remove dust and dander. The coils keep your appliance cool, but if they are damaged, they aren't going to be able to function properly. If the coils are damaged, you should call an appliance repairman for help.

If your refrigerator freezer is thawing out, you could potentially lose a lot of money in wasted food. Be sure to keep your appliance clean and well-maintained to prevent an issue, and call a local appliance repair service like D& S  Appliance for help if these tips aren't helping.
