Three Signs You Should Repair Your Fridge

by Ricky Carlson

Your fridge is the central appliance within your kitchen, and it is constantly working in order to keep your food properly chilled. However, just like all other major appliances, this constant use can cause your fridge to begin to function less effectively over time. Understanding some of the warning signs associated with a fridge that no longer does its job as intended can help make it clear to you when you should contact an appliance repair specialist to take a look at your unit.

Condensation

One of the first and most obvious signs that your fridge will exhibit when it is in need of professional attention is heavy condensation. This is most often caused by either a broken or damaged seal around the door, which is allowing hot air to seep in, or because of a damaged thermostat within the fridge itself that is preventing the interior temperature from getting cold enough. In either case, the presence of condensation points to the fact that your food is not being properly chilled, and over a long enough period of time that condensation can cause mold and mildew growth to occur in your fridge, which represents a serious health hazard.

Spoilage

In a somewhat related vein to the above point, you should consider having your fridge inspected and repaired if you find that your food is going bad well before its expiration dates. If this happens once or twice it's possible you picked a a bad carton of milk: if it continues to happen, your fridge is no longer able to adequately chill your food.  Repairing your fridge is necessary for health reasons, as eating spoiled food can be dangerous, and also for financial ones: having to constantly replace your groceries before you can eat them will quickly add up.

Noise and Heat

Another warning sign that you need to get in touch with an appliance repair specialist is if your fridge chronically makes an extremely loud noise. This points to the motor constantly being engaged as it attempts to maintain the interior temperature, something that should not be occurring regularly unless you are leaving the door open. This noise indicates that your fridge is no longer operating effectively or efficiently, and is struggling to simply maintain a constant temperature. This constant operation will likely also generate a great deal of heat on the outside of your fridge. If you can feel heat on the side of your fridge, or even in the area near your fridge, your motor is likely running the risk of burning out or damaging other internal components, and you should get in touch with a professional straight away before it fails entirely.
